Lake Osakis , MN

Boasting a dozen odd resorts and campsites as well as public water access, Lake Osakis is a birder's dream. It offers access to some of Minnesota's more obscure migratory waterfowl, including Forster's Terns, Western Grebes, and American White Pelicans, and is only a few hour's drive from the Twin Cities. The nearby fields and swamps boast red-winged blackbirds, purple martins, and a ton of native wildflowers. Osakis is not just for bird watchers, though; it's got something for everyone! Resorts offer deluxe accomodations, including canoe, paddleboat and pontoon rentals, while campsites offer full access to the lake at a minimum cost!

If you visit Osakis in July or August, remember that the migratory waterfowl that remain tend to beat the heat by flocking on nearby lakes and ponds. We've seen American Pelicans and Forster's Terns flocking in the ponds that border Lake Osakis. We've also spotted quite a few on the the ponds that run along 127.

Directions:

From the Twin Cities, head West on 94. About 60 miles West of Duluth, you'll see 127 into Osakis. Exit on 127 and take a right. When you hit highway 27, there will be a visitor's center on your left, which is the easiest way to get maps and directions. To loop around the lake, follow 27 to 37, make a right on 10, which will trace aroun dthe Northern basin of the lake. Take 3 off of 10. 3 Will take you back to 27 n the town of Osakis. Make a right on 27 and you'll hit 127 again. Confused? Like we said, it's probably best to just consult a local map.
