Lake Elmo has a lot of faccilities. R/V campgrounds, a boat launch, a staffed swimming area, an equestrian center, numerous picnic areas, and even an archery range. If you're looking for hiking and nature watching, though, Lake Elmo isn't the most accessible.

If you want to hike their trails, your best bet is to park in the equestrian or picnic area, and then head south towards the group camp areas. Since you'll have to cut across a lot of dense, grassy areas to get to many of the trails, you're going to want to wear long pants. Sunscreen and a baseball hat aren't bad ideas either, as most of the trails we found cut across grassland, where cover is minimal.
