Early Spring at Frontenac State Park, MN

Located on the bluffs of Lake Pepin, just miles from Lake City, the scenery from the bluffs alone makes Frontenac worth visiting, especially when the fall colors peak. The combination of bluffs, woodlands, and waterways create a perfect environment for shorebirds, waterfowl, and migratory raptors and songbirds. It's one of the state's biggest birding hotspots.

If you're looking to get away from traffic and congestion, we've always found Frontenac to be a great place for a secluded hike or camping trip. The park is set far enough south of the cities to get few daily visitors, and with miles of hiking trails that cross bluffs, woodland and prairie.

You'll want to be careful if you visit Frontenac in early Spring, as many of the bluff side trails are coated in ice and either treacherous or completely impassible.

Directions:

Park Location: 29223 County 28 Boulevard, Frontenac, Minnesota 55026

Take Highway 61 south from the Twin Cities. Frontenac State Park is about 10 miles south of Red Wing. Watch for the brown signs, and if you hit Lake City, you've gone too far.

Distance from St. Paul, MN: Approximately 60 miles
