Less than an hour's drive from the heart of the Twin Cities, Carlos Avery Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is home to some of Minnesota's most rare and endangered species, including the Sandhill Crane and the Blanding's Turtle. The staff at Carlos Avery have done a lot to nurture these species, and as such, much of the park is off-limits to visitors. The miles of rugged roads/hiking trails that span the park provide visitors with access to the WMA's wildlife and beautiful scenery.
Consider taking a car through Carlos Avery if you're visiting in the summer; as clouds of deer flies and mosquitos tend to mob some of the trails.
