While it may come as a surprise to some, apple trees are not native to America. They were introduced from Europe during the colonial times and cultivated as a food source. It has since escaped farms and orchards, and a wide variety of apple trees (Washington, Granny Smith etc) now grow wild. An understory tree that can tolerate a good deal of shade, the Apple is not a particularly invasive or competitive species, and does provide valuable forage for Deers, Woodchuck, and other species.
