A common flower in much of middle Minnesota, Rue Anemone often grow in clumps on hillsides and along forest trails in April and May. Their flowers, which vary from white to lavender, can grow three to a stalk, and there are usually nine or ten slender leaves to a plant; usually three on each stem. Rue Anemone are perrenial, and will often appear in the same spot year after year for decades. The green centers of Rue Anemone produce no nectar, and the plant reproduces mainly through deep root systems.
Despite their delicate appearance, Rue Anemone are a very hardy species, and are an indicator of rich, healthy forest soil. They tend to prefer shady spots, and we have found that they grow well on the northern side of hills. Rue Anemone had a place in folk medicine. It's said that said that Indians once brewed the roots of the Rue Anemone in medicinal teas.
