Along with Common Dandelion, Ground Ivy is one of the most infamous weeds to ever lay siege to midwestern lawns and gardens. A Eurasian import, Ground Ivy grows in low, dense patches, seldom growing over four or five inches in height. It has tapered green or green-purple leaves with round teeth, and droopy purple flowers that, some muse, are shaped like gingerbread or stick men. The leaves remind many of spearmint, and for good reason; Ground Ivy is a member of the mint family, and its leaves, when crushed, emit a distinct, minty odor.
Its reputation for spreading in a thick blanket across lawns, agressively crowding out grass and other plant life earned Ground Ivy the nickname "Creeping Charlie". . Just as arboreal ivies anchor themselves at every node, each Ground Ivy has roots at the base of each leaf, and it can be very difficult to eradicate once established.
It should be noted that Ground Ivy is toxic to housepets, and may induce a variety of symptoms, including cramps, diarhhea and respiratory problems. If you think your pet has eaten Ground Ivy, take it to the vet immediately.
