Black Willow ; branch | Stillwater, MN |
A native tree, the Black Willow thrives in Minnesota's lakes, ponds, and wetlands. A very flood-tolerant plant, the Black Willow often grows right along the shoreline, where it has fewer competitors for sunlight. The base of the tree may be completely submerged during periods of heavy rain. It provides excellent cover for Wood Ducks, Green and Great Blue Heron, Mallards, Wood Ducks, and food and nesting materials for Muskrats, Beaver, and other aquatic wildlife. It's an excellent choice for native shoreline restoration or pond gardens as it has such high wildlife value.
The easiest way to procure a black willow is to cut one of its young, green twigs (make sure that it is at least 8" long, and be sure to cover the wound on the tree in a grafting compound to avoid infection), and soak the base of the twig in a glass of water. In about two weeks, the twig will begin to grow roots of its own, and may be planted. Try to plant it near the shore of a lake, pond, or wetland where it will be sure to get plenty of sun.
The Black Willow is often mistaken for Weeping Willow, but its branches do not hang and are not nearly as flexible.
