Shorebirds

Perching Birds | Woodpeckers and Creeping Birds | Raptors | Waterfowl | Shorebirds | Ground Birds

Herons, cranes, storks, egrets, plovers and sandpipers all fall under the broad category of shorebirds. All shorebirds are carnivores, and insects, amphibians, and fish are common staples of many of their diets. They have long, spear-like beaks to nab up prey, and long legs terminating in webbed feet that have evolved to help them plod quietly through the shallows or wet meadows. Not all of these birds are aquatic. Many cranes and storks spend a good deal of their time hunting insects and rodents in grassy fields.
